Any effort to resume talks between White House officials and top lawmakers are “fruitless” until the White House agrees to a $2.2 trillion price tag, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.
She said that all talks on the stimulus effort had collapsed and both sides remain at a “tragic impasse.”
“We have said again and again that we are willing to come down, meet them in the middle—that would be $2.2 trillion,” she told reporters. “When they’re ready to do that, we’ll be ready to discuss and negotiate. I did not get that impression on that call,” she said, referencing a conversation she had with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.
For his part, Meadows said he is not optimistic about reaching a new coronavirus relief deal before the end of September, predicting the House Speaker will use the government funding cliff at the end of next month as leverage to strike a deal on pandemic aid.
